Public consultation on ISO proposal to establish new Technical Committee “Lithium”

Public consultation on ISO proposal to establish new Technical Committee “Lithium”

The ISO proposal is to create a new Technical Committee for Standardization in the field of lithium mining, as well as its extraction, separation and processing into lithium materials (including oxides, salts, metals, master alloys, lithium-ion battery materials, etc.).

The work program includes terminology, technical delivery conditions, unified testing methods and analyzes.

Lithium is the lightest alkali metal element and is widely used in industrial sectors such as glass, ceramics, metals, textiles, synthetic rubber, lubricants, as well as for medical treatment. In recent years, the use of lithium in the fields of battery energy, aerospace engineering and nuclear energy has grown rapidly. Lithium has become a very important industrial metal product, which is well known as "21st Century Energy Metal".

More and more countries are recognizing the importance of lithium in the supply chain and many such as the USA, Australia, Canada have increased lithium production. Global lithium resources are distributed mainly around the salt lakes in South America (Chile, Argentina and Bolivia) and in various ores extracted from hard rock found in Australia, Canada, Congo, Zimbabwe and others. The main consumers of lithium products are China, South Korea and Japan. International trade in lithium has grown significantly.

These reasons gave rise to the need for standardization. The aim of the proposal is to begin developing standards for lithium materials that support production, fair trade and sustainable supply of lithium globally.

The new technical committee will not overlap with existing ISO and IEC Technical committees and will maintain close cooperation with ISO/TC 79, Light metals and their alloys, dealing with standards on lithium containing alloys and IEC/TC 22, dealing with electric-powered vehicles and in particular lithium-ion batteries.

In case of national interest, BDS can approve the creation and Bulgaria can obtain P- or O-membership in the work of the newly established committee.

Anyone interested in the topic can send an opinion on the need for the establishment of the new ISO Technical committee to Elena Georgieva, BDS responsible expert, at elena.georgieva@bds-bg.org, Tel: 02/81 74 594 by 25.04.2020.
