ISO proposal for the creation of a new technical committee on “Natural and Engineered Stones

The national standards body of  Italy (UNI)  submits to ISO a proposal for the creation of a new Technical Committee on “Natural and Engineered Stones”.

Scope:  Definitions, requirements and test methods for natural stones relating to rough blocks, slabs, semi-finished and finished products intended for use in building and for monuments and for engineered stones with resin or cement binders or a combination of the two, intended for use in countertops and vanities, floor and wall coverings, ancillary uses, for interior and exterior.

Although there are a variety of international associations (ASTA Worldwide Engineered Stone Manufacturers Association,Stone Federation, Euroroc  etc.), so far only the European countries were interested in these products using standards for their use. Today the distribution of the final products and applications are present worldwide and for the time being there are no common ISO standards available.

The proposed initial work program includes the development of product specifications for natural and engineered stones and several supporting standards on test methods assess their performances. It should be noted that European standards already exists that examine different product testing methods and are already being applied outside Europe, for example in China and India. With reference to horizontal issues coordination with other existing TCs could be considered: for example with TC 189 "Ceramic tile" for the currently developing PWI 23892 "Ceramic tiles – Slip resistance of ceramic tile surfaces" in order to have aligned standards with reference to the structure of the document, each one containing product's peculiarity.

Subsequently, the priority is given to the development of the following test methods to determine the following characteristics: Chemical resistance, Thermal shock resistance, Abrasion resistance, Freeze and thaw resistance, Impact resistance, Linear thermal expansion coefficient, Dimensional stability

Dimensions and geometric characteristics, aiming to the characterization of both natural and engineered stones.

In order to achieve the global harmonisation of the information to be provided to the manufacturer and the end user and that should supported environmental sustainability in the field of natural and engineered stones in terms of quality aspects, performance characteristics and safety requirements of the products, standards dealing with definitions and requirements will be developed afterwards.

In case of national interest, BDS can approve the creation of ISO/TC on “Natural end Engineered Stones”. If the establishment of ISO/TC is accepted by the national standards bodies – members of ISO, Bulgaria can obtain P- or O-membership in the work of the newly established committee.

The national stakeholders can provide their position on the proposal for this new field of ISO technical activity by 10.09.2019 to Lachezar Nakov,  by e-mail: lachezar.nakov@bds-bg.org, phone +359 2 81 74 505.
