ISO proposal for the creation of a new technical committee on “Sex Toys”

The national standards body of Swedish Standards Institute (SIS) submits to ISO a proposal for the creation of a new Technical Committee on “Sex Toys”

Scope: Determination of safety and consumer information requirements for materials and design of products intended for sexual use

In a study published in 2018, Swedish researchers see an increase in the number of sites used for sexual pleasure, leading to severe surgical procedures. 40 percent of these objects where noted to be sex toys. Sex toys are being produced, designed and sold globally, it is a global market with consumers across the globe. There are no international standards or regulations specifically for these types of products. Each manufacturer and retailer are free to make up their own test method and quality systems, at times based on standards and rules from documents with similar material.

A proposal for a global standard for manufacturers, retailers, healthcare providers and consumers aims to reduce the incidence of sex toys as a cause of incidents. This involves formulating clear requirements for risk assessment, sufficient information for the user, highlighting safety and quality requirements and providing design recommendations.

In case of national interest, BDS can support the creation of ISO/TC on “Sex toys”. If the establishment of ISO/TC is accepted by the national standards bodies – members of  ISO, Bulgaria can obtain P- or O-membership in the work of the newly established committee.

The national stakeholders can provide their position on the proposal for this new field of ISO technical activity by 10 of July 2019 to expert Zhana Georgieva, e-mail:, tel: +359 2 81 74 584  .
