CEN proposal for the creation of a new CEN/CENELEC Technical Committee: “Preservation of Digital Cinema Movies”

The national standards body of Germany (DIN) submits a proposal for the creation of a new CEN-CENELEC Technical Committee with the title “Preservation of Digital Cinema Movies”.

The scope of the committee includes standardization in the field of a long-term storage and preservation of movies, both films in digital formats and digitized analogue films. Standardization of the distribution formats is excluded.

The aim of the committee will be the specification of requirements for standardizing a long-term archiving of digital film content as well as definition of instructions and procedures for storing and preserving digital movies in a well structured and interoperable format allowing an unified approach in archiving the European digital cinema.

The initial work programme of the new committee envisages the development of two standardization deliverables based on existing standardization activities at national and international level:

  1. One European Standard regarding the definition of an archive framework for long-term archiving of digital film content. The standard will identify necessary interoperability and compliance test procedure to achieve in interoperability between different archives.
  2. One Technical Report specifying guidelines on how to use the referenced standards within the archive framework and how to ensure the integrity and quality of digital data.

It is envisaged also the development of software for the purposes of standards application.

The national stakeholders can provide their position on the proposal by 20 of August 2017 to expert Antoaneta Kalfina, e-mail: antoaneta.kalfina@bds-bg.org, tel: +359 2 81 74 597.
