CEN new technical committee: CEN/TC 453 "Nutritional supplements compatible with doping prevention"

CEN National Members approved the proposal of France (AFNOR) for the creation of a new Technical Committee, CEN/TC 453 “Nutritional Supplements compatible with doping prevention”.

The principal aim of the committee will be to develop European standards and other deliverables for nutritional supplements compatible with doping prevention in sport, for consumption by people practicing sport as part of a varied and well-balanced diet.

Various studies showed that foodstuff in general, and food supplements in particular, are likely to contain doping substances and consequently lead to positive results in anti-doping tests carried out by competent authorities.

The provisions on nutritional supplements are regulated in Directive 2002/46/EC along with food products, intended for sportspeople. There are several main international and European documents, applicable in the field of doping prevention such as the 1989 Council of Europe's Anti-Doping Convention, the UNESCO's International Convention against Doping in Sport and the World Anti-Doping Code developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

In relation with the implementation of all these documents and in order to establish reliable conditions for manufacturing and sale of nutritional supplements that are in line with European and International antidoping policies, the new Technical Committee CEN/TC 453 starts as preliminary work item the development of a European standard on good practices for manufacturing nutritional supplements in sport and food products, intended for sportspeople.
