Bulgaria will host a meeting of the working group "Health tourism services" to the International technical committee ISO/TC 228 "Tourism and related activities", which will be held on 09 and 10 November 2016 in Sofia. Bulgarian Institute for Standardization will host the meeting.


The scope of the working group is standardizing the requirements for providing the quality health tourism services. The drafts being developed in this working group are the following:

  • Thalassotherapy services
  • Medical SPA - Service provision requirements
  • Wellness SPA’s services
  • Medical tourism.


Representatives of the following countries will attend the meeting: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Kenya, China, Colombia, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Nigeria, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Spain, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Switzerland, UK, South Africa, as well as representatives of the European Spas Association (ESPA) and others. Experts from the permanent working group "Balneology" and from BDS/TC 89 "Tourism activities" will participate from Bulgaria.


An accompanying seminar with international participation on "Medical tourism - applications and best practices" will be held after the working meeting on 11 November 2016 (Friday) from 9:30 in Hall 1 at BDS Centre for meetings, conferences and trainings.


Heads of hospitals, leading experts in the field of medicine, sanatoriums, health spas, NGOs, associations and others will participate at the seminar.


The purpose is the stakeholders in this field in Bulgaria to get acquainted with the benefits of standardization, with international practices in providing health tourism services. Experts from Bulgaria and abroad will share their experience in the medical (health) tourism in this area.


The proposal for developing standards in this area on Medical tourism, as a kind of specialized tourism that meets the needs of tourists from restoring or maintaining the mental and physical status and treatment, using various modern methods and programs outside the hospital institutions will be also presented during the seminar.

  • Assoc. Prof. Nikolay Tsonev, Maya Vassileva-Danova – Department "Economics of Tourism" Faculty "Economics of Infrastructure", University of National and World Economy, Bulgaria

The participants in the seminar will receive a discount for purchasing standards in the area of BDS/TC 89 “Tourism activities”.

All participants will receive a Certificate for participation and a CD with the presentations.
