Proposal for the creation of a new CEN/TC "Assistance dog & guide dog teams standards and instructors competences"

The national standards body of Slovenia (SIST) makes a proposal for the creation of a new Technical Committee “Assistance Dog & Guide Dog Teams Standards and Instructors Competences”.

The initiative for this new field of technical work was launched by the Slovenian Instructors Association – Centre for Guide Dogs and Assistance Dogs (SLO-CANIS) and is based on the standardization work done so far in the field: the СД CEN/CWA 16520:2012 “Guide dog mobility instructor – Competences” and recently published document CEN/CWA 16979:2016 “Dog training professionals – Knowledge, skills and competence requirements”.

The principal aim of the committee will be to develop standards to specify requirements for training of guide dogs and assistance dogs for persons with disabilities, including the required skills, knowledge and competence of instructors. The standardization work in this field will help for the acceptance of unified standards across Europe, developed based on the best practices in the field.

The program of work of the committee will include the development of standards on the guide dogs and assistance dogs’ mobility, dog care and welfare, professional behavior and competences, education etc.

The national stakeholders can provide their position on the proposal by 20 of August 2016 to Ekaterina Slavova, e-mail: ekaterina.slavova@bds-bg.org, tel. +359 2 81 74 579.
